Statue of Equality: Sri Ramanujacharya's Legacy in Hyderabad

The Statue of Equality symbolizes Sri Ramanujacharya, one of India's most significant social reformers and spiritual leaders. Born in the 11th century, Sri Ramanujacharya was a proponent of equality and social justice. His teachings emphasized the equality of all beings and advocated for uplifting the marginalized sections of society. In a time when caste-based discrimination was rampant, Sri Ramanujacharya preached the message of inclusivity and unity. The trust conceptualized the statue to commemorate the 1,000-year birth anniversary of Ramanuja, costing an estimated ₹1,000 crore, where the project cost significantly came from devotees' donations.

The Statue of Equality, standing at a majestic height of 216 feet, is a sight to behold. Crafted with intricate detailing and precision, it is a fine example of architectural brilliance. The statue depicts Sri Ramanujacharya in a seated posture, imparting blessings with one hand raised in a gesture of compassion. The design of the statue symbolizes peace, harmony, and enlightenment—ideals that Sri Ramanujacharya stood for throughout his life.

Surrounding the centre figure are tiny sculptures illustrating scenes from Sri Ramanujacharya's life, each meticulously sculptured to capture the energy of his teachings. These sculptures vividly depict his relationships with his disciples and his efforts to fight for social equality. Visiting the Statue of Equality is more than just admiring a massive building; it is also about immersing oneself in Sri Ramanujacharya's teachings and philosophy. As visitors approach the monument, quiet surroundings greet them, and a calm atmosphere infuses them. The vast land around the memorial is well-planted, providing a perfect location for study and meditation.

Upon entering the premises, visitors are greeted by a museum dedicated to Sri Ramanujacharya's life and teachings. The museum offers a comprehensive insight into this revered saint's legacy through interactive exhibits, artefacts, and multimedia installations. Every part of Sri Ramanujacharya's life is vividly presented, from his early years to his contributions to philosophy and faith.  

The statue complex also houses a meditation centre where visitors can partake in guided meditation sessions and spiritual discourses. The tranquil ambience of the meditation centre provides the perfect setting for introspection and spiritual growth. Besides the main statue, the surrounding premises have about 100 small caricatures of famous temples of the country that depict different forms of Lord Vishnu. Every evening at around 7 PM, an open & beautiful light and sound show takes place, depicting various stories related to Ramanuja.

The Statue of Equality is a striking symbol of unity and diversity in a country with a rich cultural tapestry. Through various outreach programs and initiatives, the statue's organizers aim to create awareness about the importance of equality and social justice. Different sections of society have empowered ignored communities through efforts to narrow the gap, from educational workshops to charitable programs.

The Statue of Equality is the second tallest sitting statue in the world. The base building hosts a Vedic digital library, research centre, ancient Indian texts, theatre, and a gallery. Ramanuja's works are displayed in the gallery so spectators can get an overview of his ideologies. The statue was inaugurated by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Mr Narendra Modi, on 5 February 2022. President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the miniature golden statue inside the base building on 13 February 2022.
